Recipe Adapted From: Milo Cookies – Jenny Is Baking

Chocolate chip cookies are such a quintessential classic cookie, beloved by children and adults the world over. If I had to count how many chocolate chip cookies I’ve had in my life, well, I’d run out of fingers to count on very quickly! That being said, sometimes it’s nice to have a little change of pace to the ultimate comfort cookie – enter Milo, a chocolate malt powder.

A Bit About Nestlé Milo

Milo is an Australian product of chocolate malt powder by Nestlé that has since travelled throughout the world. Most of the time it’s mixed with milk or water to create sweet chocolate drinks, either warm or cold. You might be thinking, “This sounds familiar? Isn’t that just Ovaltine/Nesquick/Horlick?”

Yes and no – While all four of them are chocolate malt powders that are used in drinks, there are minor differences in each one (sugar content, inclusion of milk powder, etc). For our purposes, this recipe was made and tested with Milo powder, though all four options are viable for the recipe.

About this Cookie Recipe

The addition of Milo (or other chocolate malt powder) creates a delicious addition to the classic chocolate chip cookie. While the internet is chock full of recipes for ”Best Chocolate Chip Cookie,” this recipe stands out by adding deeper flavor and more depth to the cookie part of the cookie. The Milo allows for a light and airy cookie with a hint of extra sweetness and decadence that maintains a wonderful balance with the chocolate chips.

Lastly, as this recipe does include a little chocolate in the cookie part, use the chocolate chips you prefer, whether it be dark, semi-sweet, milk, or white.

Ingredients

  • 1 ⅝ stick of butter (¾ cup + 1 tablespoon)
  • ½ cup brown sugar packed
  • ⅓ cup white sugar
  • 2 large eggs – room temperature
  • 2 ⅓ cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup of Milo powder (alternatively Ovaltine/Nesquik/Horlick)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 ⅛ cup dark chocolate chips (or semi-sweet/milk/white)

Kitchen Tools

  • Electric Mixer (Standing or handheld)
  • Cookie/Baking Sheets
  • Silicon baking mats/parchment paper
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rubber Spatula
  • Ice cream scoop or two spoons to shape the dough

Cookie Instructions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350℉ and line your cookie sheets with parchment paper or silicone.

Step 2

Cream the butter and sugars – every 30 seconds, scrape down the side of the bowl to make sure everything is getting fully mixed in. The result should be light and airy (about 2 minutes).

Step 3

Add eggs and vanilla extract to the butter and sugar mixture – mix well.

Step 4

In separate bowl mix together flour, baking soda, and Milo.

Step 5

Fold the flour mixture into the wet ingredients (butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla) until it is just combined.

Step 6

Form the dough into small balls (about the size of a golf ball or walnut) and arrange on a baking sheet. Keep approximately an inch of space between them as they will spread a little.

Step 7

Bake for 13 minutes and remove from the oven. Cool on wire racks.

Enjoy!
