Classic Black & White Malt

Glass of a black and white malt with a metal straw

Summers in Florida can be absolutely brutal. The moment you step outside, you’re hit with an overwhelming wave of heat, making you want to retreat back into the cool sanctuary of air conditioning. This is why ice cream and frozen treats are a must-have, not just during summer, but all year round.

Recently I started a journey with Invisalign to help with my TMJ disorder. One downside of having braces or aligners is the need to avoid super crunchy foods, which means no ice cream with added candies or chocolates. This brings me to today’s recipe: the classic black & white malt. Milkshakes and malts are perfect frozen treats that don’t require crunchy add-ins, making them ideal for anyone with dental constraints.

I have a particular fondness for malts over milkshakes because they remind me of my dad and grandpa. Both had malt mixers (electric drink mixers) and would often make either chocolate malts or black & white malts. As today’s focus is on the black & white malt, you can guess it’s my favorite. When my grandpa passed, my dad inherited his mint-green malt mixer which has been in the family for decades. Since my dad didn’t need his old malt mixer anymore, he was kind enough to give it to me.

Even though malt mixers are not required for this recipe, I have to say that having my own malt mixer adds a bit of extra fun and nostalgia. This mixer is pretty compact so it does not take up much counter or storage space.

To me, my dad is the master of the black & white malt, and I strive to replicate his recipe down to the last detail. He always added a special “surprise” at the bottom of the glass, such as a Hershey’s Kiss or a few chocolate chips.

So, without further ado, here’s what you need to make a single, quick black & white malt:

Ingredients

To make a black and white malt you will need the following ingredients:

  • 3 large scoops of vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt (slightly softened for best results)
  • Approx. 2 teaspoons chocolate syrup
  • Approx. 2 large teaspoons of malt powder
  • Approx. ½ cup milk or dairy free alternatives (plus more to taste).
  • Whipped Cream (optional)
  • Chocolate chips or Hershey’s Kiss (optional)

Kitchen Tools

And also the following kitchen tools:

  • Malt Mixer/Electric Drink Mixer or Blender

Instructions

  1. Add all the ingredients into the stainless steel cup or blender.
  2. Blend to your desired consistency.
For thicker malts, mix everything until just blended. For a more liquid consistency, add a bit more milk. If the mixture is too thick, add a dash of milk and continue blending until you reach your preferred texture.
  3. Take a large glass, add the optional chocolate at the bottom, pour in the malt mixture, and enjoy!

This simple and delightful treat is perfect for cooling down on a hot day and brings a touch of nostalgia with every sip. Enjoy!
